As I think I've posted before, the Sony A series has become much more appealing since Zeiss started getting serious with the Batis and Loxia lenses for Sony E mount. The A7II and A7RII are the cameras Nikon and Canon should be making.

I demand a second opinion! According to that STUPID test I'm 50% hipster.

It does make you wonder what Canon/Nikon are thinking... I can understand them following up with research and development for further professional DSLR bodies, since there will be a niche and very profitable market for those for quite a while yet, but should that stop them from R&D new mirrorless offerings? I don't think so. So where are the results from this R&D into mirrorless? ???

P.S. As much as I like my Sony RX100 Mk2, I wish it was Fuji that had full-frame sensors inside their mirrorless bodies. I'd find it much easier to commit to a Fuji System than a Sony one. Once burned and all that. And before Mic pipes up with "what's full-frame mean anyway", it means a larger sensor than Fuji's current offering. I see real benefits, for what I shoot, with larger sensors, and "full-frame" is still the best compromise, IMO.

If canon made a GOOD mirrorless FF, that'd catch alot of track.

Especially given they already have the lenses.

To take full advantage, Canon would have to redesign their lenses with shorter back focus, so that one of the major advantages of mirrorless - smaller overall size - could be achieved. That said, if existing EF lenses worked seamlessly and without any slowdown through a Canon adapter, that would give Canon a major advantage in the market. Especially for the longer lenses, where size differences would be minimal anyway.

P.S. I would be all over that! Icon_smile

From dpreview:

"PDAF will work even with third-party lenses via existing adapters, including in continuous AF tracking mode. This is potentially a huge deal – especially for Canon users. We’ve used an a7R II with a Canon 24-70mm lens and a Metabones adapter, and focus is indeed very fast indeed. We’ll be looking at this in more depth as soon as we have a production sample camera, but for now, we’re highly impressed."

Nice to see that Lloyd Chambers agrees with us regarding Canon and Nikon. He offered the following thoughts in his blog after gushing over the A7R II:

"Long live the DSLR. It has many fine qualities and the need for it won’t go away soon, nor will Sony match the Canon and Nikon lens lines any time soon (except that most of these lenses can be used on Sony!!!). Anyway, speaking in market share terms, who cares? As in truly lusting after a DSLR any more? The 95% of the market is moving to mirrorless while the Walking Dead CaNikon duopoly apparently does nothing more than waste year after year scratching their respective behinds. Neither of these companies even offers an EVF option for their cameras, their 1080p video quality is low-res mushy crap, the rear LCD is still not Retina, conventional autofocus is great for sports but lacks precision and accuracy for general purpose shooting, and an OVF is 100% useless for most shooting tasks (and totally useless for accurate manual focus).

Nikon and Canon are in very serious trouble in the face of these gains from Sony, and Sony is just warming up—2016 ain’t gonna be less good. The A7R II is maller and lighter and cheaper, has better sensor with more megapixels than the D810 and almost as much as the Canon 5DS (but probably better dynamic range than 5Ds), 4K video, in body image stabilization, and adaptability to wide range of lenses with another Batis lens due this fall and more lenses in the pipeline from Sony. The A7R II will have its flaws, but given the improvements, who know how far Sony will carry this forward. Scary shit for CaNikon.

The market needs competition. Are Canon and Nikon even capable of breaking out of their dinosaur mindset, let alone designing something groundbreaking? It seems increasingly dubious because the core issue is a corporate culture based on fear and doubt, of circling the wagons around the traditional product line. Neither company (people at the decision making levels) gives a crap what I think (“I” meaning myself and others like me), a position I regard as unwise to the point of stupidity and indicative of impending disaster for these companies."

I demand a second opinion! According to that STUPID test I'm 50% hipster.

Back in the film days it was a triumvirate - it was Canon, Nikon, and Pentax that made the professional SLRs that everyone wanted! Minolta were also in there, but not quite at the top tier, and while everybody lusted after Olympus SLRs, and they were the equal or better than anybody else's offerings, they were not really a major player in the market (they *were the duck's nuts though!).

Pentax dropped the ball when digital took off, and Minolta were bought by Sony. Which I assumed (at the time) would be the death of Minolta, but it looks like quite the opposite, even if it is under the Sony name.

The dearth of mirrorless offerings from the major two players in the market puzzles me. Even if they continue to offer DSLRs, which they certainly should, I cannot see the downside, for them, in getting into the mirrorless market.

You can only sell so many cameras, so selling mirrorless cameras means a corresponding drop in DSLRs. Which is all they know.

Much like Kodak selling the patent to a digital camera on the basis that it would hurt film sales. Well, they were right there...

If it is this, and I hope it's not (they should not care what they sell, as long as it says "Canon" on it - photocopiers, printers, other office machines, cameras, professional optics for TV cameras, etc), then they are a bunch of idiots. Bottom line - as long as they sell millions of camera units, who cares how the cameras work?

Nikon are in a slightly different, more difficult position than Canon, being much smaller and much more specialised, but still - as long as they sell enough cameras, why should they care what sort of cameras they are?

And, as if on cue, Canon just announced the release of this monstrosity:

No EVF, huge lens, $1000.

But you can take selfies with it:

[Image: Canon-PowerShot-G3-X-premium-compact-camera.jpg]

Expensive Canon PowerShots and Nikon Coolpixes that are as big and costly as many mirrorless offerings make no sense to me and are probably D.O.A. before they hit store shelves.

Nobody. They simply care about the markets they have an apparently stranglehold on, and into which they have poured billions of dollars of R&D, marketing, etc.

.... and they will keep the stranglehold on those markets, even if they start selling other cameras - nobody makes better DSLRs than Canon and Nikon, and nobody is likely to try! So why not try and expand into other markets? ???

This doesn't make sense on so many levels that it boggles the mind. How did these two companies get so big in the first place? Obviously it was by making stuff that people wanted to buy - so what has changed? There must be people at both Canon and Nikon that are seeing the new opportunities being presented by the mirrorless market... but why aren't they doing anything about it? ???
