Why staying up late is *good for you

Staying up late might not be as bad for you as your parents would have you believe. Take me, for example:

I stayed up late last night. Very late! My friend David Finlay and I stayed up through the night, because of reports of a mass ejection that was on its way to Earth from the Sun. Lucky we did, because the solar storm arrived shortly after 5AM, and it arrived with a vengeance! The Pacific Ocean had a purple glow from the reflection, something I have never seen before (and this was easily seen with the naked eye, it was a bright and colourful display).

This was the biggest, baddest auroral display that we have ever seen. This far north of the magnetic south pole, any sign of aurora is almost unheard of, never mind the sort of ferocious display that we were treated to during the early hours of Tuesday morning (23 June 2015): VIDEO

But, staying up late is good for you! It must be, because my photos, and time-lapse videos in particular, have somehow gone viral in the space of only a few hours. Dave's stuff is also popular, but for some reason my vids are getting the lion's share of the views and the interest has been almost overwhelming.

The Facebook page of The Australian has hosted its own version of one of my videos, and it's been viewed nearly 50,000 times already, and I only created the video this morning! The video was licensed to other places as well, and the views are rolling in! And as much as I am proud of my creation, I have no idea why this one has gone viral with the speed that it has.

It's been a crazy day - Mashable.com have written an article about me and my aurora chasing and have mentioned and quoted me in another article here. I've had to mute my phone and actually disable Twitter notifications because of all the retweets, mentions, quotes, messages, etc. Because it's very hard to compose an email to try and negotiate a deal for your vid when your phone is constantly hassling you. Dave and I were featured on Buzzfeed.com as well, here. WIN News (Australian TV network) have sent a camera crew to interview me for local news, but then decided to run a feature in the national broadcast as well. They also ran my vids, complete with my watermark, during both broadcasts. I came across surprisingly well, considering my lack of sleep and the fact that I *hate* TV interviews (they are nothing like they appear in the final edit).

It has been a strange day. The world has picked my video, and all the while the views keep adding up. I'm not complaining, monetised views are a good thing, I just wish I knew why. So I could repeat it the next time I'm trying to gain some exposure. (Please don't say "because internet" Icon_smile ).

I went out again tonight, because solar activity was still high and the chances of another aurora were very good. Unfortunately, it was not to be - the skies were cloudy and unsettled, and the solar storm never materialised (even though all the indications were that it should). So it's almost 4 AM *the morning after*, and since I've been awake for well over 40 hours... I think it's time to go to bed. Icon_smile

With friends like these, who needs mankins? I do, that's who.

Speaking of surreal... that video on The Australian FB page has over 94,000 views now, my YouTube counts have skyrocketed, and when I woke up today I have discovered that my vids have been distributed to many other places around the globe in the meantime.

The news.com.au FB page has my video, with over 44,000 views: https://www.facebook.com/news.com.au/vid...217086617/
7 News have me on their FB page, with over 20,000 views: https://www.facebook.com/7newssydney/vid...445025488/
ABC Illawarra have a photo of mine, with a story about Dave Finlay and me, on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/abcillawarra
Yahoo have a story on me, with a US video that includes a mish-mash of different aurora videos alongside mine: https://au.entertainment.yahoo.com/video...alian-sky/
MSN.com have my video online: http://www.msn.com/en-ae/video/watch/stu...vi-AAbYx5K
Yahoo have me online in Singapore, too: https://sg.screen.yahoo.com/stunning-tim...56021.html

... and the list goes on. I've lost count on how many views my videos might or might not be getting - it's completely out of hand!

It's lonely at the top! Icon_wink But... for those of you who will still talk to me, here is a link to that TV interview (interview is a loose term, since the reporter wasn't actually there - they only sent the cameraman with all his gear, and I was looking into space, pretending to be responding to a person, while the reporter phoned the questions in to a phone that was in my hand, in speaker mode): https://www.facebook.com/WINNewsIllawarr...859560689/

The video was shot from the southern headland of Easts Beach. I live just to the north of Easts Beach, so the commute was brutal - about 2 minutes by car, so 3 minutes total, maybe 3.5... but that would include getting the gear in and out of the car. Icon_lol

Good going, Rudi. Keep it up and next time they may send a reporter along with the cameraman. Which makes me think, what do you do for an encore? Record a meteor strike in Siberia?

Things are getting weirder. Yesterday a neighbour stopped by, just to tell me that she saw me on the front page of the local newspaper. In full make up and everything. <Shivers>. Anyhoo... that should be the end of it. Media interest has waned considerably as the news-making machine moves on to other things.

Speaking of other things, this will tie in nicely. Here are a few shots of the Jupiter-Venus conjunction that has been in the news (yes, I did get approached for a comment and a photo, which they wanted for free, but didn't get - the comment will have to do them if they are too cheap to pay). As seen from near Kiama lighthouse. I had to travel further afield for these - almost 4 minutes by car! Icon_lol

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser! (Yes, that's a word. Icon_cheesygrin )

Based on people seeing my time-lapse video I have been offered a bunch of jobs over the last few days, all which I initially refused. But some people just won't take no for an answer. So I will be doing two of them. The weirder one of those two? I will be directing a music video! Yup, you heard that right! (I guess James Cameron was not available Icon_razz ). I *told them that I have no experience in directing videos, and I really tried to get out of it, but in the end they talked me into it. Two reasons: 1) The obvious, and 2) We get to fly drones! I had an idea for the song that they want to do, and it involves aerial footage - in fact it will be ALL aerial footage - and they liked the idea and want me to direct it (even though I told them I have absolutely no directing experience).

This is likely to be my first and last directorial experience, but hey - we get to fly drones! How could I say no? ??? Icon_mrgreen

Yeah, yeah. What I want to know - why would people assume that I know how to direct a video after watching a simple time-lapse on YouTube? And why would they not believe me when I tell them that I know nothing about directing? Isn't that... bizarre? This isn't false modesty - I'm telling them the truth!

Why wouldn't they take my word for it? That is what I want to know.
